The Joy Of Frankincense

This time of year, the benefits of frankincense essential oil come to mind with growing frequency, as friends and family take on colds and flu. Of course, it’s also one of the gifts the baby Jesus – really, the toddler Jesus – received. I know, Jesus was really born in the spring, blah blah, but when you’re raised celebrating His coming on December 25, the connection is made.

In the ancient world, frankincense was considered as precious as gold. To me, it’s been more precious – but more on that in a moment. Whether the ancients gave the actual essence an arbitrary value, or they knew about the health benefits of frankincense, we can’t say for sure. But it has long been used as a symbol of worship in certain religions and religious denominations.

My experience with frankincense

I first began using frankincense as a remedy against depression – usually hormonally-induced. I would put a couple of drops under my tongue, and within five minutes be feeling cheerful and optimistic again.

Yes, within five minutes. Because unlike the vast majority of companies on the U.S. market that sell frankincense oil (and that includes the top money-makers), the company from which I buy does not dilute their frankincense. Diluted oils lead to diluted results, if any at all.

Fast forward. Several years ago, I had a bunionectomy. For the uninitiated, all you need to know is that the victim – I mean, patient – is unable to walk for several weeks without having severe swelling happening within a few seconds to a couple of minutes of getting off her feet.

Translation: I was confined to a couch with my foot up most of the time – and I hated it. I am an active person, and also independent. I like to be on my feet a lot, and I don’t like not being able to do for myself. So within a couple of days of the surgery, I got depressed.

Really depressed. And this went on, day after day.

Finally, after two or three weeks (it’s been so long now I can’t remember exactly) I couldn’t stand the negativity machine-gunning my mind all day long for one more second. And I remembered frankincense.

I hopped over to where I kept my essential oils, put a few drops under my tongue, and – guess what? Yep. Within five minutes life was looking a whole lot better.

And my outlook stayed that way. I probably took frankincense a few more times over the next week or so, but that was about it.

But the health benefits of frankincense oil go way beyond eliminating depression.

More benefits of frankincense essential oil

Since we’re on the emotional benefits of the oil, let’s park there for a moment. This precious oil…

  1. relieves post-partum depression,
  2. relieves stress,
  3. reduces anxiety, and
  4. heals emotional wounds.

Then there are the many physical benefits. Frankincense…

  1. restores youthfulness to skin,
  2. soothes and heals the mucus membranes,
  3. eradicates respiratory tract problems,
  4. eases shortness of breath,
  5. eases digestive problems,
  6. heals urinary tract infections,
  7. heals mastitis,
  8. relieves heavy menstrual flow,
  9. eases labor pains,
  10. boosts the immune system,
  11. helps in the healing of blemishes and scars and other skin maladies, and
  12. reduces inflammation.

The oil in its pure, undiluted form can do all that because it is anti-everything: anti-bacterial, -viral, and –fungal.

Most exciting of all, frankincense is anti-cancer. It inhibits the growth of tumors, cancerous or not, and stimulates healthy cell regeneration (which is why it is also great for treating scars).

If you have read thus far, read this, too: the esteemed government organization known as the Food And Drug Administration forces me to tell you that none of the above information is intended to treat, prevent, cure, or diagnose anything. Buyer beware, use frankincense at your own risk, blah, blah, blah.

Here’s my personal caution: neither essential oils nor any other natural remedy can ever take the place of a healthy diet. For information on what that looks like, I invite you to check out my book, Simple Diet, Beautiful You. If you need support in switching to a healthier diet, try this awesome resource.

So why is frankincense oil in my home if my diet is so great? I can’t control all the toxins and bacteria and viruses flying through the air. It’s an imperfect world, and even we health nuts suffer from physical challenges.

However, the health benefits of frankincense essential oil have been well known for centuries, and well-documented during the past several decades. Experts in essential oils say that if nothing else works, use frankincense.
